If you have to use Pay Per Click (PPC) advertising, get yourself a long tail

You always see low rates per click advertised on the search engines and social media sites, but when it gets down to your product and the search terms you want to get clicks for, somehow the reality is nothing like the advertised, from x pence or x cents per click and the costs can spiral out of control.

So what's the answer?

Get yourself a "long tail" search term.

e.g. if you sponsored the search term "loans" you'd most likely clear your bank account very quickly, its a highly competitive, high volume search term, that probably should be left to the banks and their deep (heavily rescued) pockets.

If your business offers loans for people with bad credit who want to buy cars, then make that your sponsored search term, it'll cost you a lot less and will target your customer more directly too.

There's also lots of tools that will help you see search trends that you may want to tap into that show some surprising results, even go for misspelt search terms or words.

In short, play around with the cheaper PPC searches, rather than paying a premium to run with the crowd.

Prepare to become a star of the small screen.
unique, unique, unique, keep it....(you guessed it), unique

Search engines love video content on a website, if its of your own making, via your webcam, mobile phone, video camera etc. and its relevant to your business, then upload it to your website, it may never get viewed and your hope of worldwide stardom may never happen, but it'll do wonders for your search results.

It doesn't need to be polished or professional, Ricky Gervais made a career out of shaky camera shots and awkward dialogue, just make it informative and relevant.

And keep it to less than 2 minutes for those of us with a short attention span or low boredom threshold.

Great to see links to any examples you know of and comment on any experience of video content, good, bad or ugly

When people talk about SEO and web marketing it tends to be the technical end of the process, but there are many FREE avenues that will enhance your listing/s that your regular SEO company possibly won't have the man hours to do the repetitive administrative tasks to capture these valuable resources.

There are numerous, often not well known, free listing sites, where you can list your business, some information, contact details and even some images, along with a back-link to your website.

Some of the obvious ones are Yell.com, TouchLocal, 118.com, some of the less obvious are the sites you'll find on a "free business listing" search, invest time and effort into these sites, every little helps, as one retail giant put it.

TIP: Make your information on every site as unique as possible and relevant to your business as well.
